Apply for Passport
You must have British nationality to be eligible for a British passport.
You should apply for a first adult passport if you’re aged 16 or over (or will be within 3 weeks) and never had a child passport.
It takes at least 6 weeks to get your first UK adult passport. Don’t book travel until you’ve got it.
Online applications
Post your form, photos and documents to the address on the declaration form. You can’t use the Passport Check and Send service.
Paper applications
You can either:
- post your form, photos and documents using the pre-printed envelope that comes with the form
- take your form, photos and documents to the Post Office if you want to use the Passport Check and Send service
HM Passport Office will contact you to arrange an interview to confirm your identity.
Your passport interview
After you apply, you’ll be asked to attend an interview to confirm your identity.You’ll get a letter from HM Passport Office asking you to phone for an appointment at a passport interview office.
The passport interview offices are for interviews only – they can’t give you a passport there and then.HM Passport Office may be able to arrange an interview closer to you if you live in a remote area. Ask when you phone.
You may not need an interview if you were born on or before 2 September 1929. Your letter will tell you if you don’t need an interview.
The interview will take about 30 minutes.You’ll be asked questions about yourself to make sure you are who you claim to be.Your application will be processed after your interview.Any personal information used in the interview will be destroyed shortly after your passport is issued.
